Economics
Public Sector Consultants is well known for exploring
creative ways to respond to economic and public finance problems
as well as for accurately forecasting economic trends. Our economics
research includes both formal collaboration—such as an economic
impact analysis, where PSC’s consultants work with data provided
by the client—and informal counsel on the state of the budget,
the economy, or other statistical and financial matters.
The firm is also known for rigorous independent economic
analyses of existing policies and new proposals. Prior independent
reviews have included segments of particular industries/sectors
of the Michigan economy, site location studies, and fiscal reports
about the current status of the tax and budget situation in the
state and nation.
The range of our research is suggested by these examples:
- For a state agency, a major study on the economic
implications of building a new Michigan freeway
- For nonprofit associations, studies of the
sector’s financial contributions to the Michigan economy
- For local school districts, studies evaluating
the feasibility of district mergers; such studies require facilitating
citizen committees and conducting focus groups
- For a northern Michigan local unit of government,
an evaluation of the potential uses, costs, and economic benefits
of developing a certain parcel of land
- For a national association, an analysis of a
liquor tax increase on the industry and on the Michigan economy
- For a Michigan community, an economic development
analysis and strategic plan
- For a mid-Michigan city, an evaluation of the
feasibility of expanding a convention center; the work included
analyzing the benefits to the local economy and making recommendations
to improve the operation of the center
